BWC awards five scholarships to local students.

Friday’s Scholarship luncheon held at our clubhouse once again highlighted the reason The Boynton Woman’s Club continues to do what we do.

BWC Education Chairmen Dot Neenan and Doris Dorr awarded five $1,000 scholarships to local students to help them with their educations at a Florida college. As as Doris noted, “This year’s recipients are really unbelievable…they excel in school, volunteer, work. They’re personable and just a pleasure to be around.”

Melanie Green, daughter of Robin Green and granddaughter of Carole Rosenblatt, is a senior at Park Vista High School. Her guidance counselor, Mary Turner, told the luncheon group, “Melanie is a total package; a perfect 10 in every way.” She is a member of several school clubs and volunteers her time at the South Florida Museum of Science. Green will attend the University of Tampa in the fall where she will pursue a career in English History and music.

Kristyn Costello, daughter of Bertina Costello and James Costello, was unable to be present as she was in Orlando at a Key Club International Conference. Her mother, Bertina, however, was there and heard her daughter’s words spoken though a letter addressed to the club. Dorr read Costello’s words thanking the club and crediting her mother for being “a great influence which has spawned my interest in helping others.” Kristyn, who noted that volunteering is a family tradtion, has devoted 2,674 hours to community service in the last four years. She attends Atlantic Community High School, and will pursue a career in orthodontic dentistry either at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale or Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Stephanie Jackson, daughter of Debbie Jackson and the late Steven Jackson, will pursue a communication and youth ministry career at Southeastern University. At Friday’s luncheon, she spoke of her extra-curricular activities in school as a member of the Santaluces dance group, Atlantic Dance, Key Club, Yearbook, French Club, First Priority, her drama group, student government and TV production. In her application, she thanked the club for, “giving someone like me the chance to go to college and pursue her dream.”

Wa´Tesha Aime´, daughter of Annet Jean-Noel is this year’s BBCHS’s Salutatorian. She is, ranked second in her class of 307. Proud of her scholastic achievements, Wa´Tesha is also proud of her participation in the Delteens sorority; the National Honor Society, the Future Business Leaders of America and the Dimensional Harmony Chorus of which she is president.

She has worked since the age of 14 at a local grocery chain and volunteers at a day care center. She was particularly glad to receive the BWC award, she said, as she is familiar with the club having sung there with the chorus. She will attend the Florida State University in the fall where she will major in business administration.

Jessica Davis, daughter of Christine Hayner, Todd Hayner and Eric Davis of New York was the first to accept her award. She said she was “thrilled” to be a recipient. She too, like her co-recipients, volunteers her time. She particularly liked working at the library for the Read Boynton program where she helped children learn how to read. She also worked with children in child safety programs, egg hunts, holiday activities and with seniors in nursing homes. She, too, is a member of the National Honor Society and will also be pursuing a career in dentistry at a Florida University. She hopes to eventually establish her own practice in Florida.

Money for the scholarships came from the Jan. 28 Fashion Show fund-raiser organized by Linda Avallone and Patricia Kropp and from a Memorial Scholarship Fund for Dr. Leone Buffan, a former president of the club, who died last year.
